Michael J. Klingensmith

Joined the amfAR board in October 1994. Chairs finance and budget and investment committees. Serves on executive
and on compensation and organizational development committees. Expertise in
finance, marketing, and publishing. On World AIDS Day 1992, Entertainment Weekly (of which he is
founding publisher) received an amfAR Award of Courage for “its example of
outstanding and generous corporate leadership...as well as for its great
contribution to enhanced AIDS awareness in the American public.”
Mr. Klingensmith became publisher
of Minneapolis’s Star Tribune in 2010. Before then he held a variety of marketing
and financial positions with Time Inc. over a 30-year period, including
president of Sports Illustrated;
president of Entertainment Weekly;
and chief financial officer of what was then the Time Inc. Magazine Company. At
the time of his retirement in December 2007, he had been executive vice
president of Time Inc. since 2001, overseeing most of the corporate groups,
including strategic planning, law, production, and information technology.
A Minneapolis native, Mr. Klingensmith received both undergraduate and graduate (M.B.A.) degrees from the
University of Chicago and is now a trustee of the university. In addition to
serving on amfAR’s board, he is on the board of the YMCA of Metropolitan Minneapolis,
Minnesota Orchestra, Macalester College, and Newspaper Association of America.
He and his wife, Ruth, have two
children and live in Minneapolis.
