amfAR’s GMT Initiative issues requests for proposals (RFPs) for innovative projects from community-based organizations addressing HIV among gay men, other men who have sex with men, and transgender individuals (collectively, GMT).  amfAR currently supports organizations in low- and middle-income countries in the following regions:  Africa, Asia and the Pacific, the Caribbean, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and Latin America.   Projects may last up to one year, and have a budget up to $20,000 (U.S.).

Currently, amfAR is interested in supporting projects that focus on the following:

  • direct service interventions to reach gay men, other MSM, and/or transgender individuals;
  • structural interventions that address underlying factors associated with HIV (such as decriminalization efforts, campaigns against homophobia and transphobia, health service provider training on GMT-friendly services, etc.);
  • research studies; and/or
  • advocacy and policy activities.

Utilizing a peer review mechanism, the GMT Initiative prioritizes support for grassroots organizations that are led by or have strong histories of working with gay men, other men who have sex with men, and transgender individuals (collectively, GMT).  Requests for proposals from each region are issued on an annual cycle, according to the following approximate schedule:
