amfAR Congratulates President Barack Obama on
Re-Election, Citing Important Advances Against the AIDS Epidemic Under His
Leadership
NEW YORK, November 7, 2012—amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS
Research on Wednesday congratulated President Barack Obama on his re-election
and pledged to continue to work with the Administration to end the AIDS epidemic
domestically and globally.
“During the past four years, the Obama Administration has
demonstrated a willingness to invest in evidence-based, scientific solutions to
help us begin to end the AIDS epidemic,” said amfAR CEO Kevin Robert Frost, a
member of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS (PACHA). “While we
still have much work to do, the Administration has a very strong track record
in fighting the epidemic both at home and abroad.”
Under President Obama’s leadership the Administration developed
the first comprehensive National HIV/AIDS Strategy (NHAS); led efforts to pass
the Affordable Care Act, which will expand health care to thousands of people
living with HIV; and worked for needed increases in funding for the Global Fund
to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria as well as domestic AIDS services.
President Obama himself has declared that “we can end this epidemic,” and he
set accelerated targets for delivery of evidence-based interventions.
Looking ahead, the Administration has said it will release a
blueprint providing a “roadmap” for pursuing an “AIDS-free generation.” amfAR
looks forward to working with the Administration to help implement the
blueprint’s recommendations and to secure necessary funding increases for the
President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the Global Fund, AIDS
research at the National Institutes of Health, and domestic HIV-related
services.
“Along with the passage of health reform, the release of the
Strategy, and funding increases on the domestic front, the Obama Administration
has continued to scale up effective services and improved the response for
most-at-risk populations globally,” said Chris Collins, amfAR’s vice president
and director of public policy. “We look forward to working with the
Administration to make further progress in all of the areas necessary to
achieve an ‘AIDS-free generation.’”
