amfAR to Play Active Role at International AIDS Conference

July 15, 2010— In sessions addressing some of the most urgent issues in the fight against HIV/AIDS—among them the search for a cure, MSM and HIV, pediatric HIV care, and aging and HIV—amfAR will play a prominent role at the XVIII International AIDS Conference, held in Vienna, Austria, July 18–23.

Even before the conference opens, amfAR will be involved in three significant meetings:

  • Drawing on its expertise in pediatric HIV/AIDS research and treatment, amfAR’s TREAT Asia program will serve as scientific sponsor of the 2nd International Workshop on HIV Pediatrics, beginning on July 16. TREAT Asia Director and amfAR Vice President Dr. Annette Sohn will co-chair one of the workshop’s scientific sessions.
  • At a basic science workshop entitled “Towards a Cure,” Dr. Rowena Johnston, amfAR’s vice president and director of research, will present a poster on the recently launched amfAR Research Consortium on HIV Eradication (ARCHE).
  • At the “Be Heard!” pre-conference, sponsored by the Global Forum on MSM & HIV, amfAR will issue a series of reports warning that a confluence of flat funding and other trends could jeopardize the global response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, especially MSM and others at greatest risk of infection.

During the course of the International AIDS Conference itself, amfAR will be involved in multiple panels, meetings, and poster presentations, among them:

  • The subject of HIV and aging is increasingly urgent as HIV-positive populations grow older. amfAR will co-sponsor a meeting on the subject at which Dr. Johnston will make a presentation on the epidemiology of HIV and aging.
  • Chris Collins, amfAR’s vice president and director of policy, will appear on a panel discussing the implications of the new U.S. National HIV/AIDS Strategy; he will also co-present posters on the advocacy work that preceded adoption of the strategy and the process of changing U.S. syringe exchange law.
  • A session entitled ”Dreams at Risk,” co-sponsored by amfAR, will address barriers to better AIDS policy among at-risk populations in Eastern Europe, where amfAR’s MSM Initiative supports grassroots groups battling HIV among MSM.
  • Several TREAT Asia network members and partners will make presentations on recent research, including a poster on hepatitis B and C among HIV patients and a cohort profile of data from the TREAT Asia Studies to Evaluate Resistance.
