A Moving Tribute to a Legend
Iconic entertainer Cher was honored with the amfAR Award of Inspiration at the fifth annual Inspiration Gala São Paulo, April 10. The award recognized Cher’s longtime support of the fight against AIDS and her efforts early in the epidemic to provide comfort to gay men living with, and dying of, HIV/AIDS. Presenting the award, amfAR CEO delivered a heartfelt and eloquent tribute address, which was matched by a similarly moving acceptance speech by the honoree.
amfAR honored Cher, Felipe Diniz, and Jean Paul Gaultier at the fifth annual Inspiration Gala São Paulo on April 10, 2015, in recognition of their contributions to the fight against AIDS. The event, presented by Harry Winston, featured explosive musical performances by pop superstar Kylie Minogue and samba great Alcione, and a live auction of luxury items, including a signed painting by leading Brazilian artist Nina Pandolfo, which sold for $80,000. Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci, and amfAR Chairman Kenneth Cole served as event chairs.
During its five-year history, Inspiration Gala São Paulo has raised $8.5 million for AIDS research and services, with a portion of each gala’s proceeds going to an AIDS organization in Brazil. This year’s event will support HIV prevention research at the Evandro Chagas Institute in Rio de Janeiro.
