TITLE:                       Senior Staff Writer

LOCATION:              New York


Oversees and undertakes development, editing, and proofreading of text for amfAR publications, fundraising materials, and other written communications, both print and electronic.  Ensures accuracy, clarity, consistency and overall quality of content.   Supports the Publications division’s goal of producing high-quality content in a timely and cost-effective manner.


Drafts text and manages copy development process for amfAR publications and electronic communications, including newsletters, website, brochures, special reports, talking points, etc.

Proofreads and edits documents, including correspondence, press releases, and event and conference materials, to ensure accuracy and consistency with Foundation style and messaging

Manages copy clearance process as necessary to ensure that all documents for public distribution receive appropriate review and approval within specified deadlines.

Interfaces with creative/design team to develop and refine layouts for newsletters, fundraising materials, and other publications.

Submits text and/or layouts to supervisor for final approval, as required.                

In consultation with supervisor, plans and oversees production and distribution of newsletters and other publications as needed.

Maintains thorough knowledge of amfAR programs, goals, and objectives, and developments in HIV/AIDS research, policy, and epidemiology.

Assists supervisor with additional projects in support of publications division, e.g., needs assessments, annual budgeting/planning, website development, research, etc. and with special projects as needed.

Assists Group Director, Public Information, and assumes some responsibilities in his/her absence.


BA/BS or equivalent, plus five years professional writing/editing experience.  Excellent writing, editing, proofreading, project management, and verbal communication skills.  Knowledge of HIV/AIDS issues preferred.  Ability to produce concise and articulate content on deadline, juggle multiple projects simultaneously, translate scientific concepts for a lay audience, and write with sensitivity about the political and social aspects of the epidemic.  Flexibility to travel if required. Solid interpersonal and computer skills.
