The Normal Heart on HBO

normal heart posterLarry Kramer’s groundbreaking and Tony Award-winning play The Normal Heart has been adapted for television by the playwright and will premiere on HBO on Sunday, May 25, at 9:00 p.m.  amfAR is an official partner in the HBO production.

A top-notch cast includes Academy Award® nominee Mark Ruffalo, Matt Bomer, Taylor Kitsch, Emmy® winner Jim Parsons, and Academy Award® winner Julia Roberts. Directed by Emmy® winner Ryan Murphy, the drama tells the story of the onset of the AIDS crisis in New York City in the early 1980s. Ruffalo portrays Ned Weeks, who witnesses firsthand a mysterious disease that has begun to claim the lives of many in his gay community and starts to seek answers.

First produced by Joseph Papp at New York’s Public Theater in 1985, the play was a critical sensation and a seminal moment in theater history.  So ahead of its time was this play that many of the core issues it addresses – including AIDS, gay marriage, and the healthcare system – are just as relevant today as they were when it first premiered.

The 2011 Broadway revival of The Normal Heart garnered five Tony nominations, winning for Best Revival, Best Featured Actor and Best Featured Actress. For more information visit
