amfAR Privacy Policy
Effective Date: April 25, 2025
Last Modified: April 25, 2025
Our Commitment to Privacy
amfAR respects the privacy of everyone who visits our websites. This notice applies
to all information collected through your communications and interactions with amfAR, including but not limited to information collected through amfAR mobile applications (“Apps”), social media accounts, or amfAR websites (“Sites”), including any features such as artificial intelligence technologies on amfAR Apps and Sites, that include a link to this Privacy Policy, as well as any other information about you that we may receive from third parties. By accessing amfAR’s sites or providing your information to amfAR, you accept and agree to the practices described in this Privacy Policy. Because your privacy is important to us, we provide you with notice and choices about the collection and use of your information. This privacy notice is available on amfAR’s homepage and on all other pages of the site.
Donor Privacy Policy
amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, will only share or sell personal information (personal information refers to any donor information, including both email and physical addresses, as well as phone numbers) once the donor has given amfAR specific permission to do so.
If you are a donor who is currently receiving messages from amfAR and would like to opt out of any mailing, either physical or via email, please contact privacy@amfar.org in order to opt out. Please note your request will be processed within 48 hours and will go into effect for all future mailings.
The Information We Collect
amfAR is the sole owner of the information collected on this site. We only sell, share, or rent this information to others once the donor or visitor has given amfAR specific permission to do so via an “opt-in” mechanism. We primarily collect information from users only in connection with online donations, sales of tickets to special events, conference registrations, and for any other purposes that are clearly identified.
amfAR may occasionally share mailing address information gathered from subscribers with organizations or parties it considers to be supportive of its broader mission. amfAR may also share information with trusted third-party vendors who contact you on behalf of amfAR.
Occasionally, amfAR does exchange or rent mail lists to like-minded organizations through bonded third-party vendors. These organizations are never given direct access to amfAR’s donor database. amfAR itself screens each mailing before we allow it to be sent to our list. Information pertaining to current amfAR board members, major donors, and/or $250+ donors is never — under any circumstance — released to external entities for the purpose of list rentals or exchanges.
Should you not wish your information to be shared with or sold to other organizations, you may opt out at any time by contacting our Donor Services Department mailing address below, or by emailing us at privacy@amfar.org.
On the online financial transactions pages listed above, we collect the following personally identifiable information: name, address, e-mail address, phone number, and credit card information. The personally identifiable information you provide is used to acknowledge receipt of your donation for tax purposes and to include you on amfAR’s mailing list. If you do not wish to be added to our mailing list, please let us know. Our online donation form has an “opt-in” mechanism for those users who wish to make donations, but do not want to receive any additional information or other material from amfAR.
Also, when you send a donation in honor or in memory of someone and request that an acknowledgment be sent to another individual/family, we will use the name and address of that individual/family for acknowledgment purposes only.
How your Personal Information may be used
We, our affiliates and service providers may use Personal Information for the following purposes:
The collection, use, and disclosure of your Personal Information will be consistent with our mission to eliminate HIV/AIDS as a major public health problem. These activities include mission support operations such as data analysis, program improvement, fundraising events, and activities, as well as providing, training, or otherwise supporting artificial intelligence technologies that power features you interact with.
We use data to evaluate engagement levels with our Sites and programs. We may use certain information (name, address, telephone number or e-mail information, date of birth, gender, dates of service, department of service information, etc.) to contact you for the purpose of raising money for amfAR, but any such communication will provide you with the opportunity to opt-out of receiving such future communications. If you reengage with amfAR without indicating your intent to opt-out, we will re-subscribe your email to ensure that you do not miss amfAR updates.
We may use Personal Information for other business purposes, such as conducting audits, fraud monitoring and prevention, data analysis, recordkeeping, developing new services, enhancing, improving, or modifying our programs and our Services, identifying usage trends, determining the effectiveness of fundraising campaigns and mission activities, and updating and expanding our business activities.
We may need to share Personal Information with third parties that provide operational services on our behalf (such as website hosting, information technology and infrastructure, data analytics, email delivery, order fulfillment, auditing or other services) or that assist amfAR with its charitable mission.

By engaging with amfAR on a public social media platform, you authorize us to share information with your social media account provider, and you understand that the use of the information we share will be governed by the social media provider’s privacy policy. Please note that any information you post within these public forums or social media pages may become public and may be read, collected, and used by anyone.
If you provide Personal Information to features available through the Services that are powered by artificial intelligence technologies provided by our vendors, we may disclose your Personal Information to such vendors.
Other Uses or Disclosures of Personal Information. We may also use and disclose your Personal Information as we believe to be necessary or appropriate: (a) to comply with applicable law, which may include laws outside your country of residence, to respond to requests from public and government authorities, which may include authorities outside your country of residence, to cooperate with law enforcement, or for other legal reasons; (b) to enforce our Terms of Use; and (c) to protect our rights, privacy, safety or property, and/or that of our affiliates, you or others. In addition, amfAR may use, disclose or transfer your information to a third- party in the event of any reorganization, merger, sale, joint venture, assignment, transfer or other disposition of all or any portion of our organization (including in connection with any bankruptcy or similar proceedings).
If you give us your phone number and opt-in to receiving amfAR messages, we may text you (SMS or MMS) regarding amfAR programs or events or seek donations. We will contact you through these methods only in accordance with applicable legal requirements, and you always have the ability to opt-out of further calls or texts.
