Dr. Andrea Gramatica joined amfAR in November 2024 as vice president of research. An expert in immunology and HIV virology with a research focus on viral persistence and immune modulation, Dr. Gramatica is responsible for shaping the strategic direction of the Foundation’s research programs.

Before joining amfAR, Dr. Gramatica served as an Assistant Professor of Immunology Research at Weill Cornell Medical College, where he led studies exploring immunotherapeutic strategies aimed at enhancing elimination of HIV-infected cells in vivo. Prior to that, he held roles as a Postdoctoral Researcher and Staff Scientist at the Gladstone Institutes/University of California, San Francisco.

His research has resulted in several high-impact publications in journals such as Cell Reports, Journal of Virology, PLOS Pathogens, and Cell Host Microbe. Dr. Gramatica has been honored with an Early Career Research Excellence Award in Basic Science from UCSF and a Gilead HIV Cures Mentored Scientist Award.

Dr. Gramatica earned his Ph.D. in Cell Biology from the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (Berlin, Germany).
