amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, is seeking a Program Officer – Research.
amfAR is dedicated to ending the global AIDS epidemic through innovative research. With the freedom and flexibility to respond quickly to emerging areas of scientific promise, amfAR plays a catalytic role in accelerating the pace of HIV/AIDS research and achieving real breakthroughs. amfAR-funded research has increased our understanding of HIV and has helped lay the groundwork for major advances in the treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS. Since 1985, amfAR has raised nearly $950 million in support of its programs and has awarded more than 3,800 grants to research teams worldwide.
The Program Officer will help oversee amfAR’s scientific portfolio by managing relationships with grantees, coordinating peer-review and funding processes, and providing internal scientific expertise across departments. The ideal candidate is a scientifically trained, detail-oriented professional with excellent communication skills and a collaborative spirit.
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
- Serve as a scientific liaison between amfAR and its grantees, providing guidance and oversight on research progress and strategic alignment
- Conduct internal analyses on grant performance and outcomes to inform funding strategies and impact assessments
- Monitor and synthesize recent scientific literature and publications relevant to amfAR’s research priorities
- Collaborate with Public Information and Philanthropy teams to ensure the scientific accuracy and clarity of external communications and donor materials
- Provide oversight for the planning and execution of requests for proposals (RFPs), scientific review sessions, and grant review panels
- Contribute to the scientific review of grant applications and participate in funding recommendation discussions
- Provide organizational support to the Research and Grants department
- Represent amfAR at scientific meetings and conferences; occasional travel required
QUALIFICATIONS:
Ph.D. in a biomedical discipline with a demonstrated record of peer-reviewed publications. Minimum 1 year of postdoctoral experience in a biomedical research setting. Broad understanding of immunology or virology (not necessarily HIV), including general laboratory techniques. Proven experience in managing or supervising research personnel and projects. Basic knowledge of funding mechanisms and procedures at NIH and similar organizations. Familiarity with AI-based tools for research or data analysis. Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational and communication skills. A collaborative and kind demeanor is essential. Preferred qualifications: Large data analysis and data management skills, experience as a peer reviewer for scientific journals and/or funding agencies, grant writing and grant management experience.

Salary Range: $85,000 to $110,000
