Andrea Marie Breiling (b. Phoenix, Arizona) is an American contemporary abstract painter living and working in the New York metropolitan area. She is represented by Night Gallery in Los Angeles.
Breiling first gained international acclaim for her unique large-scale brushless work, a body of kinetic abstract works which collectively became known as her “spray paint paintings.” These works, made exclusively with spray paint on canvas, are known for their ethereal and atmospheric tones—at times, they seem to channel historic masters of color field painting like Helen Frankenthaler, Frank Bowling, Morris Louis, and Sam Gilliam.
ArtCube named Breiling’s institutional show in Mallorca, Spain, as one of their “Top 10 Must-See Shows” of 2024. In 2023, she was recognized by Artsy, Ocula, and Barry Schwabsky on Artnet as a rising artist. That said, Andrea maintains that the recognition she is perhaps most proud of was being featured on New York Times’ Roberta Smith’s Instagram page!
Her work belongs in the public collections of the Arsenal Contemporary Art collection, Montreal; Institute of Contemporary Art and MAP Foundation (Marquez Art Projects), Miami, FL; Phoenix Art Museum, Phoenix, AZ; Deji Art Museum, Nanjing; Dangxia Art Foundation, X Museum, and the CVG Foundation, Beijing; Inimá de Paula Museum, Belo Horizonte, Brazil; Green Family Art Foundation, Dallas; and CCA Andratx, Mallorca.
Andrea received her B.F.A. in Studio Art and Gender Studies from UC Irvine in 2008 and her M.F.A. in Studio Art from Claremont Graduate University in 2014.
The diptych for amfAR, So Stunningly, was made during her 2024 residency in Mallorca, Spain, where the island’s vivid Mediterranean sunsets provided daily inspiration.
