American photographer Slim Aarons (1916–2006) made his mark shooting the social influencers of his day in rich, saturated colors and stunning black and white. During his long career, he created iconic portraits of acting giants Melina Mercouri, Dolores Del Río, and Clark Gable, writer Truman Capote, jazz musician Louis Armstrong, and fashion designer James Galanos, among countless others. Frequently shooting for Town & Country, Venture, and Holiday magazines, he captured socialites and jet-setters soaking up the sun on the beaches of the French Riviera, skiing the slopes in Gstaad, and boating on Lake Tahoe. Habitués of Venice, Rome, and Capri also became inspirations for his images.

The first time Slim Aarons went to Italy, it was as a World War II combat photographer. He moved back in 1948 to work as a photographer in LIFE magazine’s new Rome bureau and went back and forth for 50 years to photograph his now-famous subject matter: “attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places.”

This collection showcases Slim Aarons’s decades-long love affair with Italy. rom breathtaking seaside aerials to intimate portraits of celebrities and high society, Aarons’ photographs celebrate the “dolce far niente” of an Italian summer. This curated collection, selected specially for amfAR, is truly all about Italy.
